Mount Kailash Tour is a long journey. It takes at least 4 days to reach Mt. Kailash from Lhasa. Even though it’s a long journey, there are several ways to get there. A few routes you can take are from Kathmandu by flight, or to China by flight or train.
Lhasa to Mount Kailash by Road:
From Lhasa, you need to drive through the G318 road to Shigatse via Gyantse if you are on tour. After that, you need to take the way of the Saga to reach Mount Kailash.
Nepal to Mount Kailash:
There are two ways to get to Mt. Kailash from Nepal. First, one flies to Lhasa from Kathmandu Airport, then follows the overland trail. Next, drive from Kathmandu to Rasuwagadi via Gyirong port.
India to Mount Kailash:
From India, you first need to enter the border between Nepal and India, i.e., Nepaljung. After that, you need to cross Hilsa on the border with Tibet and go to Burang via the S207 road.
Visa
Individual travelers are not allowed to enter Tibet. You need a valid Chinese Visa and a Travel Permit for Tibet for the Mount Kailash Tour.

Accommodation
There are around 6-7 hotels when you travel to Mt. Kailash. But as Mt. Kailash is still developing in terms of travel, high hopes and expectations for accommodations aren’t encouraged. There are 4-star hotels with a price range of 650-1080, 3-star hotels with a price range of 173-218, and also economical hotels with prices ranging from 140-200. Most 4 and 3-star hotels offer amenities like 24-hour hot showers, air conditioners, TVs, telephones, and complimentary Wi-Fi. The economical hotels are perfect choices for budget-friendly travel.
Food
While traveling to Mt. Kailash, consider bringing packaged high-calorie food, such as energy bars, in advance, as food options are limited on this route. Along the way, you’ll find various monasteries offering food options, including stir-fried rice. There are also small tents on the other side, but they offer only instant noodles. The main food you get on this trip, however, is Tibetan food such as Tsampa and noodles.
Other Expenses
In Mt. Kailash, it is recommended not to spend much on anything extra, as the whole cost of the tour is a bit on the expensive side. However, as other expenses arise, they will mainly be souvenirs or gifts to take back home for yourself or your friends and family. Extra costs could also come from the snacks or beverages taken during the tour. You could also spend on tickets or some other activities.
Best Time
The best time to visit Mt. Kailash is during spring (April and May), summer (June, July, and August), and autumn (September, October, and November). It is essential to ensure that our visit doesn’t coincide with unusual weather conditions. You should expect snowfall throughout your travel and also carry proper winter clothing on any day you visit the mountain. Additionally, consider scheduling your visit to Mt. Kailash during the Saga Dawa Festival, typically held on the 15th day of June, to experience the festival alongside the local Tibetan community. Always remember to cross-check the weather of the mountain before fixing your trip dates.

Things You Should Know Before Visiting Tibet
- There are over 800 settlements in Tibet.
- The Tibetan economy is dominated by subsistence agriculture.
- Due to limited arable land, the primary occupation of the Tibetan Plateau is raising livestock, such as sheep, cattle, goats, camels, yaks, dzo, and horses.
- The dogs of Tibet are twice the size of those seen in India, with large heads and hairy bodies. They are powerful animals and are said to be able to kill a tiger. During the day, they are kept chained up and are let loose at night to guard their masters’ house.
- Tibetan architecture contains Chinese and Indian influences, and reflects a deeply Buddhist approach. The Buddhist Wheel, along with two dragons, can be seen on nearly every Gompa in Tibet.
- Losar is the Tibetan New Year festival.
- The six red bands in the Tibetan Flag are: the Se, Mu, Dong, Tong, Dru, and Ra.
- Ethnic Tibetans comprise 90% of the total population of 3 million in the Tibet Autonomous Region; the exact population number depends on how temporary migrants are counted.
- You are not allowed to visit Tibet independently. Foreign citizens need to have a guide with them.
- To obtain a Tibet group visa, a minimum of 5 people is required in the group.
- Journalists and Diplomats are not allowed to travel to Tibet with a travel agency.
- Not every place in Tibet can be visited. There are Attraction Restrictions.
- You can’t enter Tibet during the Tibetan New Year, usually in February and March.
- One of the best places to visit around Mt. Kailash is the Mansarovar.
