Called as the “beautiful water,” Sundarijal is located about 17 km northeast of Kathmandu.  The tiny village is the gateway to the Shivapuri National Park and along the popular Kathmandu Valley Trekking. Sundarijal is especially famous for young local travelers for day hiking, swimming, picnic, and bike riding. A couple of hours after an uphill hike, you will catch a spectacular view of the Kathmandu valley and the beautiful Tamang village called Mulkharka.  The journey to Chisapani starts from Sundarijal and continues until Nagarkot, and further to Dhulikhel and Panauti.  These areas are also famous for valley cycling tours and trekking trail for local and foreign tourists. Sundarijal also supplies water to Kathmandu as well as electricity to the valley through the Sundarijal Hydropower Station.

How to get Sundarijal from Kathmandu

The easiest way to reach Sundarijal is to rent a private car or taxi, but as an alternative, it is also reachable by a local bus.  We would suggest arranging in advance if you would like to use a private car or hire a taxi to get to and from Kathmandu.  If you are lucky, you might be able to get a cab from Sundarijal, but most likely, the cost is higher than you would expect.
Trekker’s traveling around from Boudhanath, Pashupatinath:  Sundarijal is reachable from the cultural world heritage sites, Boudhanath and Pashupatinath, which are nearby Ringroad.  From there, you could take a microbus to Jorpati, and from Jorpati, transfer to another bus to Sundarijal.  To be sure, you can ask the bus driver about your final destination and directions.

Trekker’s traveling from around  Thamel: If you live close to the city center or around Thamel, then you should go to Ratnapark, an old bus park (terminal), which is within walking distance from Thamel. Buses depart every 10-15 minutes to Sundarijal.  The journey is roughly 45 minutes bus ride. If your leading destination is Chisapani, it is a 5-6 hour hiking from Sundarijal all the way uphill via Mulkharka.

Trekkers coming from Langtang-Gosaikunda Trekking:  The last stop on your trail is likely Sundarijal.  To get to Kathmandu from Sundarijal, you can take the bus that goes to Ratnapark (if Thamel is your destination) or Jorpati (if Ringroad is your first stop).  From Ratnapark, Thamel is only a 10-minute walk, or you can take another microbus.  From Jorpati, you can take a bus that goes to Ringroad.

What to see or do around Sundarijal?

1. Canyoning and Swimming in Sundarijal waterfall: Two of the most popular activities among locals and tourists are swimming and canyoning in the Sundarijal waterfall.  Canyoning with an expert is one of the recommended adventures holidays in Nepal, but please be reminded that it is also hazardous without an expert guide.  Due to the powerful current and water flow in Sundarijal, there were casualties reported this year, so please take necessary precautions and ensure you hire a professional company such as Yatritrekking.com and Chhango Adventure to organize such kind of activities for you. The link below is worth reading about canyoning in Sundarijal. And also, this video link will tell you how excellent canyoning is in Sundarijal Nepal.

2. Shivapuri National Park: This is a 45 minute to 1-hour hike from Sundarijal, and you will reach the entry border of Shivapuri National Park. Locals, youth, young couple families, and other groups enjoy the picnic inside the park.

3. Sundarijal Hydropower & Water Supply station: A significant percentage of  Kathmandu’s drinking water and electricity is supplied by Sundarijal’s Hydropower and Water Supply station.  As the dam lies in the middle of the national park, several waterfalls surround it, beautiful jungle, and green rice terraces. Due to this, it becomes an attraction for locals and tourists.

Drinking some local wine made by the Tamang community in Mulkharka and smoking Marijuana leaf from their backyard is also quite common in the area. While it is generally reasonable to smoke Marijuana leaf in their homes for medicinal purposes or occasional use in small amounts, buying in large quantities and selling it in the black market is illegal in the country.

Born and raised in Gorkha, Nepal, I am proud to call the Manaslu region my home! I have been in the travel business for over a decade from being assistance guide, leader, to being a manager. And finally today I am the founder of NEST Adventure. So you could say I know my way well enough in the Himalayas, especially in some of the off-the-beaten-trails in Nepal like Manaslu, Kanchenjunga and Mustang!

I am passionate about travelling and I strongly believe that seeing the world shouldn't break the bank (at least not too much!). I have backpacked to over 15 countries in Asia, Central America, USA, Canada, one-third of Europe, the Caribbean Islands, and Latin America.

I studied in the UK and moved to the United States. During that period, I had the opportunity of working with multinational companies which taught me how to deliver quality customer service in the business. As a world travelling backpacker myself, and travel expert for the Nepalese Himalayas, I started writing about my own country. Which I would love to share with you. In case you required free information about Nepal or join a group with our existing departure, (particularly If you are a solo hiker for the restricted area) please do not hesitate to visit my office in Thamel. We are located in the centre of Kathmandu called Thamel. I am happy to share a cup of Nepali tea and free information.

Our team at NEST has earned 5/5 star ratings on TripAdvisor. Don't forget to visit our customer feedback page on TripAdvisor.
