The town of god Shiva, Shivapuri National Park, was established in 2002 and listed as one of the ten National Parks in Nepal. About 15 km from the Central City Thamel, this national park is the closest to the Kathmandu Valley. It is located in the mid-hills north of Kathmandu city. It covers an area of 159 sq. Km. in the districts of Kathmandu, Nuwakot, Dhading, Sindhupalchok, and Chisapani. Its highest peak lies at 2,732m.

The annual precipitation of about 1,400 mm (55 in) falls mostly from May to September, with 80% during the monsoon.
