Trekking in Nepal in September

The month of November is the starting month of Autom (fall season) in Nepal. It is the time that monsoon would subside down, and the sky would stay beautiful and bright. Usually, monsoon in Nepal starts on June 10 and last until September 23 remains for 105 days. However,  It is the fact that in the past few years monsoon wouldn't completely stop until the last week of September. This year in 2019 monsoon entered in Nepal on June 20, which is ten days delayed from the usual starting date. If the rainy season remains for 105 days, This year monsoon won't last until the first week of October

Hiking in Nepal during September might be quite challenging for some route If the monsoon is quite strong. Like I said, September is the end of monsoon, and you might encounter light rainfall during the night leaves the sky clear in the morning but not as hard rain as in July and August. Planning a Nepal trip could be ideal in September to avoid the crude. In this writeup, I will take you through some of the best trekking trail suites for September and the things you should be prepared.

Things to pack for September Hike in Nepal

If you are planning a trip to Nepal during September, you should consider packing the things that are going to be useful for your journey. Rule of thumb to remember, the higher you go, the colder it becomes while, the lower elevation temperatures are still warm. SO you need to pack for both warm weather and cold. Here is the essential list you shouldn't forget to bring.

What you need is:

⇒ Hiking boot (high ankle boot recommended)
⇒ Sleeping bag (It is highly recommended to have one)
⇒ Pancho, Umbrella or rain garter
⇒ Down Jacket
⇒ Pair of the inside thermal sweater to keep you warm inside
⇒ Pair of easy dry hiking pants
⇒ Hiking socks
⇒ Hiking bag and rain cover (minimum 50l+10)
Additionally, you could consider taking, warm hat/ head cover, scarf, sunglass, lip guard, sun cream, trekking pole, headlamp, windproof gloves, water bottle, water purification drop, camera accessory, first aid, light snacks etc. If you don't have all those lists brought, don't worry you will be able to rent hiking gear in Kathmandu at a cheeper price.  As we had already discussed the weather during September, now let's discuss some of best trekking during this month. Mostly this list has been made from the trekkers choice and most importantly from our expertise to give you the best view in a safe area from landslide and another natural disaster.  Tilicho Lake Annapurna Nepal

1. Upper Mustang Trek

The Hidden world of ancient Buddhist Kingdom Upper Mustang Nepal is listed on one in the less rain falling areas of Nepal while Pokhara valley is the most in the list. This is the reason why Upper Mustang listed in number one rain shadow trek in Nepal. Even during the monsoon season like June, July and August one can trek easily through entire trail with ease and comfort. Since after December there is quite heavy snowfall so no one treks from start of December. September is recommended to trek upper Mustang all the way from Kagbeni to Lomangthang and back to Kagbeni, regular flight to Jomsom from Pokhara make great ease and reduce the hassle of cancellation of flight resulting on the long drive from Jomsom to Pokhara. As there are no such terrains covered by bushes or forest on Upper Mustang, there will not be any changes due to monsoon as there is no such frequent rainfall too similar to the area lower than Jomsom; here is a useful link where you can get more information about
Upper Mustang Trek.

If you need more information please do not hesitate to contact us we will do our best to put you in a safe and suggest you our expertise during the travel period in September in Nepal.

2. Annapurna Circuit Trek

While Upper Mustang Trek is in our number one list Annapurna Circut Trek has listed in the number two best trek during the month of September. The Manag valley the other side of Upper Mustat is also in one of the rain shadow areas of Nepal makes this trek very safe and cheaper than going to Upper Mustang.  Although a lot of websites say Annapurna circuit is not interesting due to the new road being constructed, in my opinion, the region has still a lot to offer and it is the best for Monsoon trek in Nepal. However, lower in the part of Annapurna Circuit might come rain but once you hit the higher ground it is heaven. All you need to do is find an expert who knows the trail very well can suggest you the best itinerary. November trail is mostly populated by local jeeps leaving dust through out the trail. Raging rivers, green forest with lush vegetation and cascading waterfalls are the best part of Annapurna Circuit Trek During September. Another plus point during trek is green yak pastures on the higher elevation that offers one of the best snapshot spots. Here is the useful link where you can get more information about Annapurna Circuit Trek.

3. Narphu Valley Trek

Similar to Upper Mustang region is declared as restricted because of remoteness and close proximity to Tibet. Nar and Phu are two different villages on the further north of Ngawal and Ghyaru leaving the busy trail of Annapurna Circuit. At the end of the trek, one can continue toward Annapurna Circuit or descend back to start point of the trek and retrace to Kathmandu. In past, it required organise trek but nowadays a tea house or home stay trek is possible to complete with a basic accommodation. Chorten in Upper Mustang Trek Nepal

4. Upper Dolpo Trek

Similar to Upper Mustang, Dolpo is also kind of deserted terrain and belongs to high Himalayan plateau where rare rainfall occur however Dolpo is comparatively more remote than upper Mustang which comes in the limelight after movie caravan was directed here. Being restricted region one need to obtain similar permits like the one needed for Mustang. Two consecutive flights are mandatory for easy access to Dolpo, Kathmandu – Nepalgunj and Nepalgunj – Dunai, however, alternatives road trail are also available. Similar to Upper Dolpo, Lower Dolpo Trek will also be best alternatives during September is you are not looking for some crowded trails like Annapurna Base Camp and Langtang; Here is useful link where you can get more information about Upper Dolpo Trek.

5. Manaslu Trek

Substitute to Annapurna Trek, Manaslu is a great option for trekking in Nepal with start of the season in September but there used to be Manaslu Trail Race so might be a problem of accommodation so just try to avoid the large flow of tourist for race rest things will be perfect for Manaslu Circuit during September. You need to check the opening of lodges in Dharamsala that is key lodges for Larke Pass as there are no other teahouses on that area. Budi Gandaki will still be roaring loud throughout the trail. Optional trip to Tsum Valley is still good alternatives as a side trip from Manaslu Trekking which lets overcome difficulties on passes due to slipperiness because of rain and snow; here is a useful link where you can get more information about Larke Pass highest point of Manaslu Circuit Trek

My dates in Nepal are from 20th August to 3rd September this year. In this time can you suggest the best fit of any route you list above please?

- George Kara

Hi George,

Thank you so much for the comment. I would say 9 days trek in Narphu Valley or 13 days in Manaslu suite in your time frame. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Best regards

Hi! I found your site very useful. I'm planning to go to Nepal, my timetable will allow me to be there around 26th of August to 8th of September. I have been looking for Annapurna circuit or Annapurna base camp treks, and newly I have found Langtang trek. I found you recommend ACT for September trek, how do you think about Langtang? My first idea was Everest Base camp, but unfortunately I haven't got enough time.  I would appreciate your help a lot!
- Silja V

Hi Silja - Thank you so much for the comment. Langtang trek would be an option too. However, it is not best in terms of avoiding monsoon. Langtang Trek lies in the low alpine forest mountain in Nepal that potentially brings more monsoon then any other trek in Nepal.  I hope this helps.

Hi Raj

How are you doing? Im planning to visit Nepal during the 3rd and 4th week of september for a total of 14 days. I wonder what trekking path you would recommend me exploring considering that I would also like to visit other cities around in Nepal.

Thank you very much

- sebastian burd

Hello Sebastian,

Thank you so much for the comment.I would recommend you to explore Upper Mustang if you can afford and if you are more then one person in one group it is easy to issue the permit. The second choice after Mustang would be Annapurna Circuit Trek as this is in the rain shadow part of Nepal. I hope this helps.
