Gokyo Valley Trek

Gokyo Valley Trek is the unconventional yet distinctive and enriching route offering the cocktail of close up Mount Everest views, ice fall of the Ngozumpa glacier and much more unforgettable scenery. Aside from natural beauty as one treks along this fairly strenuous route one becomes familiar with the Nepalese and Tibetean cultures followed in this aesthetic Himalayan region. The Gokyo Trek ends at Gokyo RI (5357 meters). Gokyo Lake Trek serves to the purpose of mild trekkers. Lying at the head of serene Dudh Koshi Valley is the best possible alternative to the ever popular. It is a peaceful trek via Sherpa heartland that allows more than enough time for acclimatization while you can relish the panoramic mountain view and comely alpine campsites. After ascending Gokyo Ri, we can savour the gorgeous vista of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu all at once
Gokyo Valley Trekking like any other conventional routes begins from once in a lifetime flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. As a precaution to altitude sickness we rest for day at Phakding after short trek. Early in the morning next day we march upward to the primary market of Himalayan region i.e. Namche Bazaar. You can stroll around the local markets of Namche as we will rest there for acclimatization as suggested by our NEST health experts. After Namche, we walk relentlessly to Phorse Village while we remain awestruck by the abundant rhododendron forest on the way. Then we will pass through waterfalls and suspension bridges to reach Dole hosting few teahouses. The occasional spotting pheasants, mountain goats and musk deer are common along the way in course of Gokyo Valley Trek. Inspired by the serene location around we reach Machhermo which is the last human inhabited place on the way to Gokyo ri trek . We will also observe the ancient Lama footprints captured as fossils at Longpongo on the way to Gokyo. Finally after reaching Gokyo, we climb Gokyo RI to enjoy the best viewpoint of entire Everest region and series of six lakes in the region. These are the prime regions and aspects of Gokyo Valley .
We, dedicated team members at the NEST always strive to create a best experience for our customers. Day 03 – Flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and Trek to Phakding

Lukla Airport located on ridge of small hill at elevation of 2840 m from sea level, often known as most dangerous airport mainly because of its difficult access with hills. Half and hour Kathmandu to Lukla Flight will drop us on tiny airstrips of Lukla from where we will head toward Phakding. It is mainly gentle downhill from Lukla to Phakding, which takes around two and half hour up to three hour depending on walking pace.

Day 04 – Trek form Phakding to Namche

Second days of Gokyo Valley Trekking will show us trail to Namche passing via Monjo, entrance gate of Sagarmatha National Park. Once we finish all gentle flat trails we will be welcomed toward steep ridge climbing till Namche by bridge with numerous prayer flag attached on a bridge. On clear weather we will get opportunity to see first glimpse of Mount Everest, which is like a reward of climbing steep up. After this viewpoint still we need to hike a lot but now it is bit gentle uphill trail. Namche is a beautiful big market where you can wander in afternoon exploring market of Namche.

Day 04 – Acclimatization Day

Gokyo Lakes, high alpine area, which is almost around at elevation of 5000 so proper acclimatization days are necessary. During this day we will hike up to Khumjung and Khunde village, twin historical village passing via Everest View Hotel, Khunde Airport and Hillary Memorial. At the end of Khumjung Village there is located and Hillary School established by Sir Edmund Hillary. Apart from this exploration we will also gain certain altitude of around four hundred meter, which help us a lot for acclimatization.

Day 05 – Trek from Namche to Dole

Dole is small hotel area where countable numbers of hotels are running mainly for business purpose. Mong La our lunch place is stunningly beautiful with view of high Himalaya on entire side. It is steep down from Mong La before we hike up again for overnight stay in Dole. It will takes around three and half hour from Mong La, so depending on time schedule we might hike up around forty minute near Dole for acclimatization.

Day 06 – Trek from Dole to Machhermo

A short but scenic trail lead us to Machhermo, apart from some minor hike up right after Dole, entire trail up to Machhermo is wide flat grassy area. It will not take more than three hour to reach Machhermo so we will have our lunch directly at Machhermo. After lunch we will again hike up for next thirty forty minutes for shake of acclimatization from where we can see area of Gokyo, not exactly Gokyo Lake trek but can figure out trail for tomorrow on our way to Gokyo Lakes which is mostly flat.

Day 07 – Trek from Machhermo to Gokyo

Another short but one of the most beautiful parts of trek along with bank of Gokyo Lakes, i.e. passing via Gokyo First Lake and Gokyo Second Lake. Exactly in front of Gokyo Third Lake there is settlement of people in form of teahouses and lodges as no body stay there for daily purpose of living all of them are for business. But people are really nice you will enjoy the stay in Gokyo with clear view of emerald green Gokyo 3rd Lake right in front of your dinning window and if lucky enough even from your room.

Day 08 – Trek to Gokyo RI and Trek down to Dole

Early morning for sunrise over roof of the world we will hike up to top of Gokyo RI, which is one of most vantage point for view as one can see four different eight thousand meter high mountain and lakes beneath your standing point. With this sunrise over Mount Everest we will descend to Gokyo for breakfast and head back to dole, which will be more fast and easier as we are loosing altitude rather than gaining it like starting from Lukla and heading toward Gokyo Lakes.

Day 09 – Trek from Dole to Monjo

Hiking up from Phortse Thanga to Mong La is one of the most difficult part of trek as it is all the way steep uphill till Mong La other wise it is about down hill and flat only till Monjo. Today we will exit from Sagarmatha National Park too as Monjo is gateway for Sagarmatha National Park.

Day 10 – Trek from Monjo to Lukla

Final day of Gokyo ri Trek we will trek all the way back to Lukla via same trail we had used before for Gokyo Lakes Trek. Lots of banners are visible on street with slogan “Last Night Party in Thin Air” you can choose the one for party with staffs, not such big may everybody grab a single can of Everest Beer and enjoy the music along with free Wi-Fi and snooker tables. Do not drink more cause we are still on high Himalayas.

Day 11 – Flight back from Lukla to Kathmandu and transfer to Hotel at Thamel

Leaving Lukla Airport is not as risk as landing cause it is all about taking off from ridge of hill. Try to get seat on right hand side of airplane cause it will let you view entire Himalayan Range from East to center part of Nepal till Langtang Himalayan Range near Kathmandu. After landing on domestic terminal of Kathmandu Airport we will transfer you back to Thamel again. Post trek meeting along with feed back section; share your view about Gokyo Lakes Trekking and your experience too.

Day 12 – Final Departure for International Airport / on your own

According to your international flight schedule our airport representative will arrange your transfer from Thamel to International Airport in Kathmandu. Or in other hand if you are staying couple of more days in Kathmandu then let our airport representative know they will arrange necessary transport for Thamel to Airport as per your international flight schedule.
NEST Adventure would like to grab your attention below about our trekking packages and service offerings, with details of what is included and excluded! We are giving you full freedom to tailor the packages to suit your needs and make your own choices during the trek.  Like a menu-approach, NEST Adventure only operates the essentials or basic, and the rest, are optional if you want them to be included.

1. What is a basic package?
In one sentence, basic package includes only the essential requirements for your trek and this includes, a Guide, Porter, Trekking Permit, and your flight ticket.

2. Why choose the basic package?
A. Simply put, you have more flexibility! It allows you to make your own choices in food and trekking accommodation.  You are not tied to what we choose for you.

B. You can customize your daily budget and have greater freedom on where to sleep and when or what to eat.  You could go over board if you wish, or you could be as selective and budget as you want on food and accommodation.

C. It would mean less tax for you (and for us!) and less service charges you have to pay to us! You can save more and every penny counts when travelling.

3. How do other trekking companies design their packages?
Normally, a trekking company designs their package including the following which we do not deem as essentials as we believe you can organize this on your own.  We are here to give you ideas as well – any questions, just give us a shout!
Sightseeing trip
Food (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
Accommodation
Airport pick-up and drop-off

Of course, if needed, we would also be happy to organize it for you and we can accommodate additional services you may want to include.  Feel free to send us a quick inquiry at Info@nestadventure.com with your requirements and we will customize the package for you!

4. What is the cost of the basic package?
The cost of the basic package is US$ 686. (Per person in minimum of 2 people in-group)  As we value transparency, the cost is inclusive and exclusive of the following services:

Exclusion
Apart from everything mentioned above, below are some items you may need and excluded from our basic package.

Food and drinks – this would roughly be USD 15-25 per day, depending on how much and what you want to eat and drink of course!!

Accommodation – please budget USD 3-5 per day for this

Travel Insurance – you may want to make sure your travel insurance covers emergency evacuation at more than 5000meters.

Kathmandu sightseeing - Before and/or after the trip you may want to take some time to explore world heritage sites around Kathmandu.

Tourist Entry Visa – when you get to the airport, all tourists are required to pay the visa fee of US$40 (for 30 days).  Note that the fee varies by the number of days you plan to be in the country.  Just a word of caution that you can pay in any major currencies, except in Nepali Rupees! So don’t bother changing that much money to pay for the visa fee! (Also, don’t forget that photo of yours which is also required!)

Trekking essentials – any trekking gears, boots, sleeping bag, down jackets, trekking poles etc! This could all be rented (or bought cheaply!) in Kathmandu.  Just walk around Thamel or we could help you to find the place where you could rent or buy these gears at a fraction of the cost in your country.

Hotels in Kathmandu – this could vary widely depending on the amenities you are looking for.  Generally, you can find places between US$10 (budget backpackers) to US$250 (really high-end hotels). Medium range 3-star hotels are around $30-$40 for double room.  Let us know if you need our help and we could point you in the right direction of the hotels in Thamel.

Tips for guides and porters – this of course entirely depends on you, but generally it is expected!

Please Note: Up on your request, package and service might be changed and easily modified. Please give us a quick inquiry (Info@nestadventure.com) with your required list.

As per arrival

As per arrival representative of NEST ADVENTURE will greet you in airport’s arrival terminal and shift to hotel in Thamel for first overnight stay in Nepal. For this you need to finish paper work inside arrival terminal in order to get Nepal Entry Visa, which is always arrival visa. So next day will be followed by sightseeing in Kathmandu and preparation of trek, introduction with crew member of trek and short pre-briefing of trek and continue trek starting from 3rd day of arrival in Nepal.

Accommodation

As per booked package either deluxe or budget we will arrange the hotel in Kathmandu accordingly on 3 star / 4 star of budget hotels, as well as accordingly in mountain too on twin sharing basis. As per available and booked we will provide attach bathroom and common bathroom on mountain. While sharing the room with fellow trekkers we will try to arrange for same gender and age group and if someone is looking for single supplement then let us know we will arrange accordingly and let you know the extra charge of single supplement. As well as sometime in mountain during peak season time hotel owner especially in high alpine area refuse to provide single supplement just for shake of business mostly because lack of plenty of rooms and monopoly to, so in such case we might need to adjust.

Meals and drinking water

Regarding the case of meals during city we provide accommodation on bed & breakfast basis so in Kathmandu we offer breakfast where lunch and dinner will be on your own as per your choice preference and selection of restaurant. In case of mountain area while trekking we offer three meals a day i.e. breakfast, lunch and dinner from free selection over menu as per available in lodges and tea houses in trekking trail. So normally in such trekking days you can consult with your guide regarding the specialty of dishes so that he can assure for the best-valued dishes. Wide range of food are available ranging from veg item to non-veg and other energetic stuffs like cheese, egg etc.

Regarding the case of drinking water normally bottled mineral water as available for purchase of very expensive almost 20 times expensive in last belt of Everest as bottle of mineral water sometimes cost Rs. 380-400 /- so it is better to carry water purification stuffs with you which can be utilized on purifying tap water as there are enough tap water in trekking area as well as hotels offer cold tap water free of cost.

Visa Requirement

Out of one visa year tourist visa can be obtained of maximum 90 days, which you can directly get as per arrival in international airport or can apply from your home country too but as per arrival will be fine too. It is recommend carrying accurate USD and don’t forget to bring two copies of passport size picture. Extension of visa from middle of stay in also possible for this process of visa extension all you need to do is fulfill form from website of immigration and submit it there with original passport copy. Multiple entry visas will be cheaper in case of money you can consult there directly.

International flight to Nepal

Nepal is easily accessible from entire word via flight, as we don’t deal with international flight ticket you can consult some other flight booking agencies for detail of cost, transit and other details. For your information no airport tax is applicable for international flight where as Nepali Rs. 200 is applicable for domestic flights which is equal to US $ 2 on basis of exchange rate of 1 USD equals Rs. 100 but sometime might get different by 0.10 / 0.20 USD on basis of exchange rate. Most of time especially in rainy season domestic flight gets canceled because of bad weather however it does not affect international schedules most of the time.

Currency and foreign exchange rate

In Nepal both coin as well as paper notes are in used however coin are of low value only. But regarding the case of paper note for day-to-day used are 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 & 1000. Do not worry about damaged paper note as it there exist clear number of currency on both side it is applicable, one can do anything with paper notes like squeezing, writing over it etc.

Since Nepal has fixed exchange rate with Indian currency exchange rate doe directly depend on value on Indian currency, now a day exchange rate of USD is 1 USD equals Rs. 95 in approximate, can check everyday over internet for current exchange rate. And for information about currency that are majorly accepted in Nepal are Indian currency, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, USD, AUD, CAD, GBP, Euro, Swiss Frank, Riyal etc.

Travel Insurance

Normally while walking in lower elevation steadily, taking enough acclimatization days we can avoid chance of acute mountain sickness however we cannot totally avoid mountain sickness instead we can lower the chance of occurrence by following some rules and paying lot attention for personal hygiene. Since the remote mountain area are not facilitated by motor roads and modern hospital so incase of strong mountain sickened one and only option is to descend as down as possible which is feasible with use of helicopters only. Such kind of expenses in high elevation area extremely off the edge and cannot be offered easily as sometime cost more than one million rupees, so it is better to have a personal health insurance. As we do not deal with such kind of health insurance but we do have good enough information about insurance providing company as some deal very quickly promptly for case where as some try to avoid and create some unnecessary delays in evacuation process. So as per need of information we will let you know some good provider from your region so that it will be easy in worse case in mountains.

High altitude sickness

Often known as acute mountain sickness are most dangerous things and any one can be victim of AMS apart from their physical strength. There is no such specific medicine for AMS so one needs to be careful from beginning. Major Symptom of AMS is dizziness, vomiting, nausea, and loss of appetite, weakness and insomnia so in order to rid of AMS major thing is to drink plenty of water and enough acclimatization in high alpine area. Although our crew leader will have adequate first aid medicine and kit sometimes one might need to cancel the trip and descend down in case of increasing symptom of AMS and in case of emergency situation clients will be airlifted immediately for further treatment in hospital at Kathmandu.
